What is Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Farm Certification?

This certification applies to farms seeking to meet the comprehensive requirements of the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Standard, addressing social, economic and environmental criteria. Certified farms receive the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal, a prestigious badge for marketing products grown on certified farms.

Over 90 agricultural crops are currently under the certification scope. The crops included are chilli, cocoa, coffee, coconut, cut flowers, fruits, nuts (such as hazelnuts), pepper, and tea. Special additional conditions apply for herbs, spices, other herbal tea ingredients, rooibos, and vegetables. Rainforest Alliance maintains a list of authorised certification bodies for audits in specific countries.

Preferred by Nature is an accredited Rainforest Alliance certification body, evaluating companies’ compliance with the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Standard: Farm Requirements. As part of our offerings, we also provide pre-assessment services.

Benefits of Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Farm Certification

  1. Protecting people and nature: Rainforest Alliance certification ensures better and safer living and working conditions for farmers, promotes gender equality, non-discrimination, and compliance with child labour laws, and supports environmentally sustainable practices.

  2. Traceability assurance: Rainforest Alliance certification provides assurance regarding the traceability of certified products.

  3. Secure future supply: By following best practices aligned with the standard requirements, certified farmers are able to grow better crops, adapt to climate change, increase productivity, set goals to achieve sustainability targets, and guide the investments to address the biggest risks.

  4. Brand credibility: The Rainforest Alliance Certified Seal is internationally recognised, ensuring brand credibility. It is supported by impartial, annual third-party audits conducted by rigorously trained auditors.

  5. Recognised and respected seal: Over 30,000 products display the Rainforest Alliance Certified “green frog” seal, providing strong consumer recognition and enhancing the credibility of the product’s sustainability.

  6. Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Rainforest Alliance certification aligns with the United Nations’ SDGs, directly contributing to global efforts, including climate action and clean water and sanitation.

Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Farm Certification process

Kickstart your certification journey by following the steps below. Have a question? Reach out to us directly. Our experts will guide you through the certification scope that aligns best with your company setup and needs.

Step 1: Certificate application
Complete registration on the Rainforest Alliance Certification Platform (RACP), To ensure sufficient time for audit preparation and scheduling, we kindly request that you complete the registration at least four months prior to the audit.

Step 2: Certification preparation
Ensure full alignment with the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Standard and the Certification Rules and Policies and relevant local laws. This involves setting up an integrated farm planning and management system covering procedures, plans, and records, assigning responsibilities and training relevant staff.

Step 3: On-site evaluation
Audits are typically onsite, including a thorough review of documents, interviews with key personnel, traceability analysis, and visits to your organisation's fields and facilities.

Step 4: Audit report
Post-audit, we provide a report detailing results and any identified non-conformities. Correcting these issues is necessary before certificate issuance.

Step 5: Obtaining certificate
The report undergoes internal quality review, and upon a favorable decision, the certificate is issued.

Complaints and resolutions

If a complaint is raised about our certification services or one of our clients, we handle this in accordance with our Dispute Resolution Policy. We may call on our Impartiality Committee if Preferred by Nature’s impartiality is under question.
