In 2022, 41.5% of the region’s coffee exports were destined for the EU, and East Africa accounts for almost 10% of global coffee production. The large share of smallholder coffee farmers in East Africa adds complexity, as ensuring traceability to farm level and verifying coffee sourcing from non-deforested land are considerable challenges.
