Important update:
On 17 December 2024, the European Parliament adopted the updated proposal (agreed during the Trilogue) to extend the enforcement date of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by one year. This delay confirms the new enforcement deadline of 30 December 2025, with most micro and small businesses granted until 30 June 2026 to comply.
Before the one-year delay can take effect, the agreed text must also be endorsed by the Council and published in the EU Official Journal by the end of 2024.
On 14 November 2024, the European Parliament approved the one-year postponement for the EUDR, setting the enforcement date as 30 December 2025 for most businesses and 30 June 2026 for some small and microenterprises. However, amendments introducing a 'no-risk' category raised concerns about potentially weakening the regulation. The proposal and amendments were subsequently discussed through the Trilogue process, which reached an agreement among the three institutions on 3 December 2024.
On 2 October 2024, the European Commission proposed postponing the application (enforcement) date for the EUDR by one year.
The legislative journey isn't over yet complete, and little can be concluded from this vote alone. A single text of changes will need to be endorsed by both the Council and the Parliament. The original application date of 30 December 2024 remains relevant until a new date is formally agreed upon.
