¿Por qué el café?

El café es importante debido a su extenso cultivo, que afecta a 25 millones de hogares, la mayoría en países en desarrollo, y a su condición de producto clave en el comercio mundial. Los principales retos son garantizar la sostenibilidad económica, adaptarse al cambio climático y equilibrar la creciente demanda mundial con prácticas de producción responsables y respetuosas con el medio ambiente.

A escala mundial: El cultivo del café abarca más de 11 millones de hectáreas, proporciona más de 120 millones de puestos de trabajo en todo el mundo y constituye una importante fuente de ingresos para 50 países tropicales.
Predominio de la producción: Brasil lidera la producción de café, con casi el 40% del café mundial, seguido de Vietnam, Colombia e Indonesia.
Predominio de los pequeños agricultores: Aproximadamente el 70% de la producción de café procede de pequeñas explotaciones familiares, cada una de menos de 5 hectáreas, lo que pone de relieve la importancia de los pequeños agricultores en la industria.
Aspectos sociales: La industria del café se enfrenta a diversos retos, entre ellos problemas sociales como la mano de obra migrante y el trabajo infantil, medioambientales como el cambio climático y las enfermedades, y económicos como el aumento de los costes de producción y el envejecimiento de los productores.
