Keeping up with EUDR: Updates to Preferred by Nature’s certification requirements

By Preferred by Nature

We have updated our Sustainability Framework to incorporate the latest guidance from the EU in relation to the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

The European Commission published the EUDR Guidance document in November 2024 and Version 3 of the FAQ in October 2024. These updates clarify regulatory requirements and enhance compliance efforts across supply chains.

To stay aligned with these updates, Preferred by Nature has revised our certification requirements in PBN-01 Sustainability Framework, updating it from version 1.4 to 1.5. The revision applies only to indicators relevant to EUDR alignment – no changes have been made to the broader sustainability requirements.

These updates were made in accordance with the Standard Development and Revision Process, published on our website.

The complete set of EUDR-aligned indicators is also available in PBN-13 EUDR-aligned Indicators, a separate document containing only the regulatory indicators. An overview of the revisions to the Sustainability Framework can be found in the Synopsis of Changes document.

About the Preferred by Nature Certification

Preferred by Nature Certification is designed for organisations of all sizes in the forestry and agriculture sectors. It provides a single framework to manage sustainability and legal commitments across the supply chain, covering field operations, due diligence processes and various commodities.

Organisations looking to comply with the EUDR can utilise specific indicators to meet regulatory requirements while enhancing sustainability practices. Additionally, Preferred by Nature offers an open-source Due Diligence Toolkit to support responsible sourcing and regulatory alignment.

The Preferred by Nature Certification aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and helps companies improve their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting. As the first standard to integrate sustainability with carbon emission reduction and compensation, it provides a comprehensive approach to environmental responsibility.

Preferred by Nature employs a risk-based approach to auditing, allowing organisations to focus on high-risk areas while simplifying certification procedures. This method makes auditing more efficient and cost-effective so that resources are allocated where they have the most impact.

Certified organisations can make claims about their compliance, and those meeting all programme criteria are eligible to use Preferred by Nature’s Hummingbird Seal.
