Preferred by Nature approved to provide PEFC EUDR DDS verification service

By Preferred by Nature

We are delighted to announce that Preferred by Nature has been approved to provide PEFC EUDR DDS services. This expanded accreditation allows us to offer a new add-on service for the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) Chain of Custody certificate holders to help companies align with the requirements of the EUDR.

The PEFC EU Deforestation Regulation Due Diligence System (EUDR DDS) is a voluntary system that helps businesses demonstrate that their forest and tree-based materials are deforestation-free, legally harvested, and properly documented. This service is available to organisations holding or applying for a PEFC Chain of Custody certificate, whether based in or outside the EU, as long as their products are destined for the EU market.

With the growing complexity of regulatory requirements, ensuring alignment can be daunting. The PEFC EUDR DDS simplifies the process by providing a structured approach to risk assessment, enhanced traceability and documentation of due diligence measures to help companies demonstrate compliance with EUDR requirements.

One of the unique aspects of the PEFC EUDR DDS is its integration with advanced technologies through a network of partners. Tools like Earth Observation (EO) and supply chain traceability solutions help companies gain a clearer picture of deforestation risks in their supply chains. Instead of guesswork, companies will be able to work with data-driven insights to make it easier to demonstrate compliance and ensure they are doing their part to protect forests.

How Preferred by Nature can help

Preferred by Nature is set to conduct PEFC EUDR DDS verification audits globally. While the audit itself may be conducted as a standalone assessment, this service is only available in combination with a PEFC Chain of Custody certificate– either as part of your regular audit or as an additional scope expansion. This flexible approach allows companies to streamline their certification process and meet EUDR requirements efficiently.

The process involves defining the scope of certification, gathering supply chain data, assessing deforestation risks, and implementing mitigation measures. After the successful audit , companies will receive an updated PEFC Chain of Custody certificate, with ongoing monitoring through regular audits to maintain compliance.

Alongside PEFC EUDR DDS, we are also offering PEFC RED II certification services. This helps companies align with the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) for sustainable biomass and forest energy production.

Additionally, PEFC has updated its Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) benchmark standard. These updates, found in the PEFC ST 1003:2024, improve safeguards against deforestation and forest degradation to ensure that PEFC-certified products meet all the necessary legal and sustainability criteria for the EU market. National PEFC members will also update their regional standards to align with this revised benchmark.
