22 April 2013, London/Beijing: Join events with a strong focus on solutions and tools available for Chinese companies to exclude illegal timber from their supply chains. The events explore how the EU Timber Regulation affects Chinese companies trading in timber or paper products, and support delegates in meeting assurance demands resulting from regulation.
The EU Timber Regulation, in force since 3 March 2013, aims to exclude illegal timber from the EU market. It affects thousands of Chinese companies, including those exporting wood products directly to the EU as well as intermediaries further up the supply chain.
The EU is one of the world’s largest timber markets with a large and growing share of imports deriving from China, standing at 18 % of total imports in 2011. However, due to the regulation the gates to the EU market will only remain open for companies that are able to provide specific information about timber or paper products as well as adequate assurance for their legal origin.
Participate in events in Beijing and Guangzhou
During 27-31May 2013, European non-profit organisation NEPCon, with the support of Research Institute of Forestry Policy and Information, Chinese Academy of Forestry, is organising three events exploring how to be pro-active and stay an attractive business partner in supply chains connected to the European market. The events will present NEPCon’s free LegalSourceTM tools and systems, which Chinese companies can adapt to meet the EU requirements.
Business seminars on the EU Timber Regulation in Beijing (30 May) and Guangzhou (31 May)
These events will equip delegates with understanding of the EU Timber Regulation and how its due diligence requirements are likely to affect Chinese companies in the timber/paper supply chain. Through business cases and presentation of operational tools, the seminars offer plenty of inspiration for how to address the challenges involved and meet buyers’ expectations for timber legality assurance.
International three-day course in Beijing 27-29 May
This fast-paced, English-language Due Diligence Expert training course provides in-depth understanding of the EU Timber Regulation and takes delegates through NEPCon’s LegalSourceTM system step by step. It also builds competencies for conducting due diligence auditing and/or supplier verification. The course is relevant for e.g. quality control managers and procurement officers of larger or international companies trading in wood or paper products, as well as for public sector organisations, consultants and NGOs engaged in the timber sector. A certificate is awarded to participants who pass the final course exam.
