TFT - CB ranking

By al@nepcon.org

What will happen if major NGOs stop supporting FSC? This question was raised by the Scott Poynton, Director of Tropical Forest Trust at the FSC General Assembly.

Poynton is well known as a key promoter of credibility within the FSC system.

“Things have gone uglier during the last years", he said. "We have seen major problems in China, Vietnam and Malaysia. Both NGOs and TFT want companies to go for FSC, but the certificates need to be robust, fair and have a good reputation. Nobody has any interest in getting operations certified and then see them suspended shortly after by FSC!”.

Poynton saw a ranking of certification organisations according to their performance as a good way to ensure better performance.

“When working with furniture manufacturers, I have seen how a ranking system results in a race among the companies to get to the top. If companies get 50 points, they will do whatever they can to improve performance and get 100 instead. Competition should not only be on price", he said.
