Rolling towards sustainability: China's tire industry drives responsible rubber sourcing on the green road ahead
Last Friday, we hosted a seminal seminar in Guangrao, China, the heart of China's tire industry. Here are some insights shared by our Executive Director, Peter Feilberg.
Last Friday, we had the honour of hosting a seminal seminar in Guangrao, China, the epicentre of China's tire industry. The event was jointly organised with the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals & Chemicals Importers & Exporters (CCCMC) and sponsored by the UK government programme InFIT. The focal point of the discussion was the EU Deforestation Regulation and its profound implications for China’s rubber industry, which stands as the world's largest manufacturer and consumer of natural rubber.
As a vital component of China's tire industry, natural rubber has fueled production for both domestic and international markets. However, the industry has historically placed less emphasis on sustainability and traceability regarding the origin of rubber. But times are changing, as regulations evolve and global environmental awareness intensifies.
The EU Deforestation Regulation is a game-changer, mandating that companies not only know the rubber tapping precise location but also validate compliance with legal requirements concerning land use rights, social rights and environmental management. This is where Preferred by Nature's expertise comes into play.
We have always been at the forefront of promoting responsible sourcing for the benefit of people, nature and the climate. Through our partnership with the CCCMC, we have developed a comprehensive sustainable natural rubber traceability standard. This resource offers guidance on navigating the complexities of legality requirements and ensuring compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation.
The seminar proved to be an eye-opener for many industry leaders, drawing attention to the crucial issue of sustainable sourcing. We were thrilled to witness a strong willingness among participants to drive transformative change, to integrate responsible sourcing principles into business models and strategies, and to align with global regulations.
Together with CCCMC and InFIT, we are confident in pioneering a sustainability revolution within China's rubber industry. By fostering dialogue and equipping businesses with the right tools and knowledge, we can ensure that the rubber sourced is not only productive but also protective of our precious planet.
As regulations evolve and environmental consciousness rises, it's time for us to rethink, refocus and realign. Let us make a difference, one tire at a time!
