Obama invitations on FSC-certified paper
Barack Obama sends out an important signal by choosing FSC-certified materials for the one million invitations to join his inauguration as president of the USA.
“We are very proud that President-elect Barack Obama and his team chose an FSC certified paper for his invitations. We see this as an indication of the seriousness of his commitment to change,” said FSC Executive Director Andre de Freitas.
The invitations as well as the envelopes and inserts are made from FSC certified paper. Both the insert and the envelope carry the FSC recycled label.
This act of support to responsible management of the world's forests is in line with recent US policy changes. Last year, the US Lacey Act was amended to effectively become the world's first ban on illegal logging. There are now penalties in place of up to over $500,000 with a possibility of jail sentence for knowingly sourcing, or failing to exercise due care when sourcing, products that contain illegal timber.
Three certified companies supplied the materials and printing services for the invitations: Paper producer Neenah Paper, paper merchant Lindenmeyr Munroe (a subsidiary of Central National Gottesman, Inc), and the printing shop Precise Continental. All of the companies obtained their FSC certificates from NEPCon's FSC-accredited partner, the Rainforest Alliance.
