New FSC-standard for Sweden
A new version of the Swedish standard for forest management, replacing the 1998 version, has been approved by FSC.
Larger operations required to involve stakeholders
My Laurell of FSC-Sweden says: “The new version does not add a lot of new requirements compared to the old standard. The main improvement is that we have made it much more clear what is meant by the indicators, and also how compliance shall be documented”.
According to Laurell, the most important new requirements included in the new standard concern conflict resolution and clear rules for when to consult with local stakeholders.
These requirements apply to owners of larger estates of more than 1,000 estates only.
Reduced requirements for smallholders
Conversely, FSC-Sweden has also submitted SLIMF rules applicable to smaller operations. Under the SLIMF proposal, a number of requirements are made more practical for owners of operations less than 1,000 hectares.
Approval of the proposed SLIMF rules is still pending.
