Market Initiative trend report 2009

By al@nepcon.org

The organization Market Initiative has released a report focusing on environmental leadership in the paper supply chain The organization calls for green innovation of the sector, and provides examples of fruntrunners on the North American market.

One of these is Canada’s largest book retailer, Indigo Books & Music Inc., which has developed a paper policy that focuses on reducing paper consumption, waste reduction and greener procurement practices. The policy involves a shift to recycled and FSC papers for their internal marketing materials and publications and has also resulted in a plan for working with its entire supply chain.

Markets Initiative hails the development of new types of non-wood paper and the industry's increasing use of recycled material, while recognizing the importance of credible certification for inputs that consists of virgin fibres. One of the report's key recommendations is that major paper consumers develop environmental paper policies specifying a preference for a combination of recycled, FSC certified wood and agricultural fibres.
