Lithuania re-assessments
During the period May to September this year NEPCon will be conducting the re-assessments for 20 Lithuanian state forests, covering a total area of close to 500,000 hectares.
The state forests which were first certified in the country are already close to the end of their first 5-year certification cycle, and now a new full assessment of the forests is needed in order to renew the certificates. The area of all Lithuanian state forests is about 1 million hectares, corresponding to half of the country's total forest area.
Lithuania's forest heritage
Although Lithuania has a smaller proportion of old natural forests left than the two other Baltic countries, a number of rare forest-living species still roam Lithuania's forests, including even large mammals such as the European bison, the lynx, and the wolf.
The degree of forest cover and the size of many individual forests found in Lithuania are also notable: More than 50 individual forests have an acreage over 5,000 ha and 17 forests each sprawl an area of more than 10,000 ha.
The certification of Lithuania's state forests provides additional assurance for the efficient protection of rare and endangered species and their woodland habitats.
NEPCon - long-term FSC service provider for Baltic forests
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were among the first countries committed to FSC certifying their state forests. With offices in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, NEPCon has long been involved in the FSC process of all three Baltic countries, and already has long-term experience providing FSC certification services to public forests in the Baltic area.
