Gucci follows green fashion trend in paper procurement

By al@nepcon.org

In a move to avoid contributing to destruction of Indonesia's precious tropical forests and to lower its carbon footprint, the Gucci Group has adopted a strong paper policy that sets preference for recycled and FSC certified paper.

In addition, the group will eliminate all paper made from Indonesian forests and plantations, avoid fiber from high conservation value forests and will sever any connections with suppliers with a poor environmental record.

“Standing rainforests are not a luxury, they’re a necessity if the world wants to stop climate change,” said Mimma Viglezio, Executive VP Global Communications at the Group. “Our actions are lowering our own carbon footprint, but we hope that they will also raise awareness inside the fashion industry that it’s possible for our industry to make a difference for rainforests and for the climate.”

The Gucci Group includes famous brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Balenciaga. All of these brands will be following the paper policy adopted by the group, for all types of paper  from copy paper to shopping bags.

“The Gucci Group’s actions and commitments confirm its place as an industry leader,” said Lafcadio Cortesi, RAN’s Forest Campaign Director. “This move sets a bar for others in fashion and retail and demonstrates the foresight our society needs for our children and grandchildren to have standing rainforests and a stable climate.”

According to RAN, other companies in the fashion industry, such as Tiffany & Co. and the H&M Group had already  taken actions towards responsible paper sourcing, while two paper and packaging industries catering to the fashion world have followed troop after Gucci's announcement.
