FSC to create online tool for timber traceability

By Preferred by Nature

FSC has announced that it is in the process of developing an online platform for tracing FSC-certified timber products throughout the certified supply chain.

The system will allow ASI and certification bodies to track timber volumes throughout the chain of custody. It will provide an effective monitoring tool that will help uncover fraudulent use of FSC claims.

An efficient tracking system could also provide enhanced assurance for compliance with the EU Timber Regulation, which requires importers to be able to trace their imported products right back to the country of origin.

"This is an extremely important initiative", says Peter Feilberg, CEO of NEPCon. "Efficient volume timber tracking could be a real step-change for FSC, in terms of credibility as well as efficiency."

"As the system grows and becomes an important requirement in the market, taking a proactive approach on possible fraud becomes more and more important. This is the single most important step that could be taken to counteract such problems. We also expect that the system will be helpful in streamlining certain data reporting procedures. I wish FSC the best of luck with this development".

FSC is working with the company Historic Futures, a leading company in supply chain traceability, on this spectacular project.
