FSC consumer packages spread in European supermarkets

By Preferred by Nature

Starting this October, Danes can support the forest by buying milk, while Swedes can do their bit by choosing pet food in forest-friendly packages.

Tetra Pak is putting targeted action behind the company's ambition to have all of its food and beverage cartons worldwide FSC-labeled. The company recently announced plans to supply customers in Sweden, Denmark and Belgium with more than 1.5 billion FSC-labeled packages  on an annual basis.

Another 1.5 billion cartons that can carry the FSC label will be offered to Tetra Pak’s customers in Spain during 2011, while 340 million will be available for Suisse customers.

“By listening to the market’s wishes, we are now in a position to offer climate-smart packages where the renewable raw material is also certified in accordance with FSC. Through this initiative, we are offering our customers an opportunity to strengthen their brands,” says Jonny Olsson, Managing Director of Tetra Pak Sverige AB.

FSC becomes a part of everyday life

Tetra Pak cooperates with several supermarket chains operating in these countries, such as Colruyt in Belgium and Coop in Switzerland. In Sweden, pet food producer Läntmännen Doggy AB is opting for FSC certified packaging, while one of the world’s largest dairy concerns, Danish Arla Foods, will offer several milk brands in certified cartons.

“We believe in the values behind the FSC label and we think that consumer recognition will grow”, explains Mads Thygesen, production manager at Arla Foods. “So far the logo has mainly been visible on garden furniture. When it starts to appear on consumer goods that are put on the table in Danish homes every day, awareness of the FSC brand is likely to reach quite another level”.

Tetra Pak’s launch of FSC-labeled cartons in these European markets follows similar moves in markets such as China, France, Germany, and the UK. Due to the size of the company and the market impact of its customers, the commitment and sustained demands by Tetra Pak for certified material constitute a driving force for the certification of forests worldwide.
