With an FSC chain of custody certificate in place, the bindery D.
L. Clément can now offer its clients easy and simple solutions for FSC labeled publications to printing houses and publishers.
STREAMLINED SERVICE FOR FSC CLIENTS
It is possible for a certified printing house to outsource the binding of FSC-labelled publications to a non-certified bindery; however, in this case the printer must own the cardboard which may complicate the process.
With the certificate in place, D.L. Clément can now simply use its own FSC-certified cardboard, and an outsourcing arrangement is not needed. Director of D.L. Clément Peter Hjorth says: "When several FSC-certified printers started to request binding of FSC publications under an outsourcing agreement, we began to consider the idea of getting certified ourselves”.
The decision was not very difficult, given that the cardboard used by D.L. Clément was already FSC-certified.
A GOOD PROCESS
The certification is part of a business strategy based on the clear expectation that demands for FSC-certified assistance will grow.
"But it is also about company responsibility", Hjorth explains. "Until now, we have primarily focused on reduction and proper sorting of waste. It makes sense economically by reducing costs of waste disposal – and you get a good feeling when you do things the proper way. We are following the same principle with our purchase of FSC-certified cardboard and our FSC certification”.
The FSC-certificate is the visible proof that the company ’passed the exam’ after having worked with a certification system for the first time. ”Initially, we felt that it was a little odd that we needed certification to prove that we are using the only cardboard we have on stock – FSC cardboard”, says Hjorth. ”But of course this is all about documentation, and the certification process was a positive experience for us”.
SEVERAL CARDBOARD SUPPLIERS
D.L.Clément currently cooperates with two suppliers of FSC-certified cardboard. ”We are pleased that the number of certified cardboard suppliers on the marketplace is growing, so we are not tied to just one supplier”, Hjorth comments.
