Carrefour commits to the FSC label

All these forest-friendly cartons will be found on the shelves of Carrefour’s French stores during 2010.

Carrefour has thus made a significant commitment to bring the FSC label to the French consumers. Serge Orru, general manager of WWF France, commented: “This major initiative, led by two WWF partners, is a great example of how leading companies are supporting the green economy, working together to provide products with a better environmental profile, but without additional cost. Now it is up to consumers to act!”

FSC-packaging on the fast forward track

But the 100 million labeled cartons are just the beginning of a major roll-out of FSC labeled packaging from Tetra Pak in France. The company’s ambition is to reach at least 2.7 billion labeled packages per year in France alone.

The same extremely fast development has already happened at the global scale. Since 2007, when the first FSC-labeled Tetra Pak package entered the market, the company has moved from selling 100 million FSC-labeled packages worldwide in 2008 to more than 2.3 billion in 2009. One can only guess at what the number will be by the end of this year!

This development is possible based on Tetra Pak’s long-term commitment and steady work with its suppliers throughout several years in order to secure the huge amounts of certified paperboards that it needs for the packages to carry the FSC eco-label.
