Awareness of FSC in Brazil
In the course of just three years, the recognition of the FSC label among the Brazilian public has grown from only 1% in 2006 to 20% in 2009.
This amazing development has been documented by a recent poll conducted by the Instituto Datafolha, commissioned by Friends of the Earth – Brazilian Amazonia.
According to the study, 81% of the population would prefer certified forest products, and are willing to pay a little more than for non-certified products. The poll also revealed that the Brazilian public remembers which companies work with certified forest products.
“The poll indicates a very promising scenario for certification in Brazil", said Karina Aharonian, Certified Forest Products Buyers Group coordinator. "We have worked on campaigns in magazines, on TV and on the metro for the last few years, showing people and companies the need to choose consumption of sustainable forest products,” she said.
The poll also showed that more than 90% of the Brazilians want Brazil to stop deforestation in order to avoid adverse environmental impact, and believe that stricter laws are needed in order to make deforestation more difficult.
The poll was based on interviews with more than 2,000 Brazilians.
