Did you know that climate change mitigation and ecosystem restoration are two of the main challenges facing humanity?

Why Climate and Ecosystem Restoration?

Ecosystem restoration and climate-related initiatives are key to our planet's sustainable development. Ecosystem degradation and climate change are two significant threats to the world. Successfully combating them is urgent and requires resilient approaches with long-term objectives.

Restoration of degraded ecosystem: Deforestation and ecosystem degradation continue to increase due to human activities such as urbanisation, intensive agriculture, and natural resource extraction. In line with international trends and regulations in ecosystem restoration, following good practices and considering a comprehensive set of environmental and social aspects is crucial for success in improving and recovering ecosystems.
Carbon footprint management: The main international target to stop climate change is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). It is internationally recognised that since the Industrial Revolution, the concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere has increased drastically, leading to an increase in the greenhouse effect and consequently, climate change.
Carbon projects / Carbon removals: International awareness about climate change in the public and private sectors has led to the creation of carbon markets, where climate change mitigation initiatives are evaluated, and their contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gases is quantified. In this arena, land use management plays an important role. Thanks to photosynthesis, ecosystems have the potential to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. These initiatives (carbon projects) require robust methodologies, monitoring approaches, and quality assurance procedures.
Carbon awareness: The public and private sectors, and society in general, are becoming aware of climate change, leading to an increased interest in understanding carbon footprints and how to manage them. The private sector requires standards, tools, and processes to calculate and reduce the carbon footprint in its objective to contribute to the mitigation of climate change.

What are the challenges?

The primary threats to our planet and humanity are ecosystem degradation and climate change. We face two urgent and critical challenges: restoring degraded ecosystems and mitigating climate change. While reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential, increasing greenhouse gas removals is equally important, with ecosystems playing a vital role in this process. Implementing effective practices to restore degraded lands is crucial for creating a healthier planet where humans can live in harmony with nature.

For effective ecosystem restoration, the world needs monitoring and evaluation

The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration highlights the importance of ecosystem restoration in halting biodiversity loss and coping with climate change while addressing other broad societal challenges. The world has set a goal of conserving at least 30 percent of our lands and waters by 2030 and that year is fast approaching. This is a pivot...
