Preferred by Nature accelerating its climate action through carbon project verification

By Katarzyna Nagrodzka

As Preferred by Nature commemorates three decades of dedicated mission fulfilment for people, nature and the climate, we are pleased to share we are now ready to verify carbon projects under the three leading carbon standards: Verra - Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCB), the Gold Standard and Plan Vivo. This marks the next step in our ongoing commitment to support credible ecosystem restoration, biodiversity enhancement and carbon sequestration initiatives.

Facing a critical moment in the fight against climate change, the world grapples with alarming environmental challenges, including the loss of natural forests and biodiversity. Amidst the urgent global climate crisis, unified action is imperative. Recognising the pressing need for ecosystem restoration and biodiversity enhancement, Preferred by Nature has expanded its activities to support ecosystem restoration and carbon removal efforts.

Preferred by Nature’s sustained efforts for climate action have been underpinned by endorsement from three globally leading carbon project certification schemes - Verra, the Gold Standard and Plan Vivo to conduct carbon project validation and verification within their frameworks. This acknowledgement follows our related accreditation by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). Leveraging three decades of expertise as a third-party certifier, Preferred by Nature is bolstering impact and contribution in combating climate change and ecosystem degradation.

Focus on nature-based solutions

We have chosen to prioritise carbon projects related to forestry and agriculture as we firmly believe that Nature-based Solutions (NbS) play a critical role in combating the climate and biodiversity crisis we face.

“It is imperative to recognise our reliance on natural ecosystems to reverse the trends of deforestation, loss of biodiversity and degradation of ecosystem functions. We believe that environmentally and socially responsible restoration of ecosystems, combined with the added climate benefit of carbon removal, remains a vital instrument for moving towards a sustainable future,"

Peter Feilberg
Executive Director of Preferred by Nature

Credibility matters

Verification and validation stand as crucial pillars of credible voluntary carbon projects, ensuring integrity and quality through third-party evaluation of project planning and execution.

"Only when carbon projects are thoughtfully crafted and executed can they deliver socially responsible and environmentally sound benefits for climate mitigation and biodiversity conservation,” emphasises Pablo Rodríguez-Noriega, Climate and Restoration Programme Manager at Preferred by Nature.
